People start to look for any edge to get ahead. Offer great and exclusive rewards but make achieving them intensely painful and slow. Multiple research projects on this demonstrate that those who play more pay more and more often. They need people to willingly buy premium items to make a profit. What you see as a problem, they see as "working as intended". But why is the MM still crap? Why do we have a large player base that is pissed off? Why do we see post after post with this same problem and we really don't get a word out of WG? So great! I am glad that I was wrong about the developers playing, this is good news, but screw them for playing and still ignoring the problems, that pisses me off even more. The issue isn't that they don't do any MM balancing, it is that the system isn't working as we have been told it is intended. MM is clearly broken for many months now by WG's own statements of how it is supposed to function, but they don't even have the decency to admit it on the known issues list or apologize to us the players for the frustration it causes. Not only would thta be working as we have been told, it also would be a much fairer match. Or to put it another way with 1 USN, 1 KM, 1 PA, 5 RU, and 6 IJN, the way MM is supposed to work as we have been told would be to put that Mogami from your team on the other team and take one of the Chapys and put it on your team. 2 DDs versus zero, 1 CV versus none, etc etc. Others have posted screenshots with a team comprised of 3 ships of a nation and the other having zero. MM is stated to balance nation lines within a value of +/-1. Your team has 4 IJN ships, the other team has 2. Real issue here is not the imbalance, it is that MM is broken according to what WG tells us.
